Angel Beats takes place in a high school in a world that could be compared to purgatory or limbo. The people that wander here have done so due to their painful and unfair lives, and deaths. In this world, a person can still experience pain or be killed, but only to awaken later on with no injuries what so ever. It is also a world inhabited by NPCs – students and teachers that aren’t really human, but that continue with school life as any human being would.
The main protagonist for the series is Yuzuru Otonashi, who woke up in this world with no memories or recollection of his life. He quickly finds himself joining the Afterlife Battlefront, a small resistance that is led by the astute Yuri Nakamura. Their purpose is to fight against God and against the unfair lives they were given. But they also fight against Angel, later known as Kanade Tachibana. As student council president, she enforces school life and rules in what the Afterlife Battlefront thinks is an attempt to get everyone ‘obliterated’.
