How Fungi Saved the World
About 430 million years ago, the fist treelike growth form-Lepidodendron. Lepidondendron, however,
was not an actual tree. It was simply a lycopods thats a bit too big, measuring about 100 feet tall.
However, these "trees" are a little to succesful. With nothing to stop them from growing, they grew,
died, and piled up. Fast foreward 40 million years, the first and only wood pollution occured.
Maybe its because our mother nature couldn't stand this chaos anymore, a fungus found a way to break
down the lingin. Instead of digesting the lingin, the fungus reduced the wood to a carbohydrate-rich
slurry from by using peroxidases enzyme. This way, the edible cellulose could be slurped up easily.
This is such a great representation of nature, always solving problems it caused for itself.
