Lilies are the star of summer. They bloom when others fade, taking the throne of a garden.
The Liliaceae consists of 110 spieces with different appearance and colors.
Legend has it that a lily grew from Eve's tears when she was cast from the Garden of Eden.
Apearance:Trumpet-shaped flowers grow to a 6-inch diameter. Stems grow to 3 feet long, carrying four to eight blossoms.
Sparse foliage is dark green. Because blooms open at various times, most lilies live one to two weeks.
Colors include white, yellow, pink, red and orange; many have a deeper color (freckles) on the inner petal.
Popular lily types are as follows: Madonna lily, Tiger lily, Asiatic lily, Oriental Trumpet, Rubrum lily,
Canna lily {tropical}, Calla lily, Daylily and the Wild lily. The Asiatic lily and the Oriental lily are more common in the northern hemisphere.
Planting: Lilies like moist, slightly acidic soil. Plant Madonna lily bulbs approximately 1 inch deep.
For other lilies, set the bulb three times as deep as they are tall. Plant most bulbs in fall or early spring. Plant the Madonna lily in late August.
Maintanence: To prevent pollen from staining petals or clothing, remove stamens.Keep them moist but not soaked.
Special Caution: Lilies are troubled with two diseases: lily virus, which is caused by aphids, and botrytis, which kills foliage.
To control aphids, spray the entire plant with rotenone. To control botrytis, ensure plants have adequate air circulation
and spray with a fungicide every two weeks. According to the ASPCA, lilies are considered to be highly toxic to cats.
Symbolism: While white lilies symbolize chastity and virtue, they brought with them additional meanings and symbolism as well.alstroemeria,
represent friendship and devotion, white stargazer lilies express sympathy and pink stargazer lilies represent wealth and prosperity.
Symbolizing humility and devotion, lilies of the valley are the 2nd wedding anniversary flower.
