~Miku Hatsune~
Hatsune Miku is a Japanese vocaloid developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and was
initially released in August 2007 for the vocaloid2 engine. There has since been numerous installments
such as additional voice banks dubbed 'Append' as well as an upgrade to the vocaloid3 engine which includes
her long awaited English vocal release. She was the first release for Crypton's vocaloid Character Vocal Series,
the third Japanese vocaloid, and the seventh vocaloid to have been created overall. She is considered the most
popular and well known vocaloid and the first to become a pop idol. Her voice is provided by the Japanese female
voice actress, Saki Fujita. The name of the title and character for the software was chosen by combining Hatsu
(first), Ne (sound), and Miku (future) thus meaning "the first sound from the future."
~Luka Megurine~
Crypton advertised Luka's 3GB vocal database as "Japanese/English bilingual" and chose her name
to express its hope that she will transcend borders and cultural barriers. Luka was designed
by the Japanese illustrator Kei, who had previously created the designs for Hatsune Miku and
Kagamine Rin and Len. However, unlike previous mascots in the series, her costume is not based
on a school uniform. Only a few days after her release, many songs were produced. On the 70th
Weekly Vocaloid Ranking (February 2, 2009), many of Luka's songs appeared in the Top 30, knocking
the very popular "Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru" and songs produced by ryo (with the exception of "Melt")
right out of the Top 30. "RIP=RELEASE" had taken the #1 spot, and had earned a total of 843,233 points,
making it the song with the highest one-week score.
~Len and Rin Kagamine~
Crypton Future Media intended to produce a VOCALOID with a young teen girl's voice at first following Hatsune
Miku, but there was also demand for a boy's voice, so Crypton Future Media hired a voice actress who could
produce both. Kagamine Rin was the first voicebank developed and introduced to the VOCALOID consumer market
on November 8, 2007.However, the package included two voicebanks: one for Rin and another for Len, both
provided by the Asami Shimoda, Kagamine Len was unveiled after Kagamine Rin on
December 3, 2007.The package was the same price as Hatsune Miku, even though there were two voicebanks in the box.
~Kaito Shion~
Kaito is developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and was initially released in February 2006 for
the first VOCALOID engine. There has since been a second installment developed for the VOCALOID 3 engine and
dubbed KAITO V 3. His voice is provided by the Japanese male singer, Naoto Fuga. The illustration was done by
Takashi Kawasaki. Crypton did not set his character and profile except for his package design. As well as Meiko,
he was not made with the aim of giving character or personality to vocal synthesis software. This was empathized
during the development also of the V3 vocal banks, with Wat stating how different the intention of the CV series
was to the intention of KAITO/MEIKO. This led to the updates leading a totally different course of development,
in comparison to the Appends of Miku, Len, Rin and Luka.
~Meiko Sakine~
She was conceived through the efforts of producers working with Meiko's voice, When many producers wondered
if Meiko was an older-sounding vocal, or younger-sounding vocal. (They quickly set on KAITO's voice since he
sounded older.) Because of this, Meiko had become forgotten because of Hatsune Miku's popularity, leaving her
behind. Meiko in particular did not have the younger sounding voice of the released vocaloid2 voicebanks released
at the time and therefore was not as appealing as they were to the Vocaloid Otaku based fandom. Meiko Sakine was e
stablished by Nanameue-P to push the limits of the Vocaloid software to make Meiko sound younger. Her official setting
is "the Meiko who came into the music trend in the age of 16" (i.e., she is not a younger Meiko variation but Meiko when
she was young) and Nanameue-P is "the producer who rediscovered Meiko in her youth". She was later made famous by the PV
"Honey" featuring her and other derivatives such as Hachune Miku, Haku Yowane and Neru Akita, as well as the UTAU Teto
Kasane alongside official Crypton Vocaloids.
